Watsu
Watsu is a form of aquatic bodywork performed in warm water (around 35°C). The practitioner supports and gently moves the recipient through a series of stretches, rotations, and massage while floating. The experience is profoundly nurturing and often described as returning to the womb.
Cultural origin
Developed in California in the 1980s by Harold Dull, combining Zen Shiatsu with warm water immersion.
What a session involves
Performed in a warm water pool. The recipient floats supported by the practitioner, who moves them through flowing sequences of massage and gentle stretching. Sessions last 60–90 minutes. Swimwear required.
Who it's for
Anyone with chronic pain, trauma, stress, or physical restriction. Particularly beneficial for those who find land-based bodywork uncomfortable or overwhelming.
