Hypnobirthing
Hypnobirthing is an antenatal education and self-hypnosis programme that prepares expectant parents for a calm, positive birth experience. It teaches deep relaxation, breathing techniques, and positive birth psychology to reduce fear and support the body's natural birthing process.
Cultural origin
Developed in the United States by Marie Mongan in the 1980s, drawing on hypnotherapy and natural childbirth philosophies.
What a session involves
Sessions are typically a series of 4–5 classes covering birth physiology, relaxation techniques, breathing practices, and birth preferences. Can be done individually or as a couple. Sessions last 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Who it's for
Expectant parents at any stage of pregnancy, ideally starting from around 25–30 weeks. Suitable for all birth settings — home, midwife-led unit, or hospital.
