Hakomi

Hakomi is a mindfulness-based somatic psychotherapy that works with the body as a living map of the unconscious. It uses mindful states and gentle body experiments to help clients discover and transform core beliefs held in the body.

Cultural origin

Developed by Ron Kurtz in the United States in the 1970s, drawing on Buddhism, Taoism, and systems theory.

What a session involves

Sessions blend talking, mindfulness, and somatic awareness. The practitioner guides the client into a state of mindful self-observation and then uses carefully crafted experiments to illuminate unconscious patterns. Sessions last 60–90 minutes.

Who it's for

Anyone seeking deeper self-understanding, healing from relational trauma, or integration of mind and body. Hakomi is particularly effective for those who intellectualise their experience and want to access deeper layers.
