EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that helps people process and heal from traumatic memories. Using bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements), EMDR facilitates the brain's natural information processing system, reducing the distress associated with traumatic memories.
Cultural origin
Developed by Francine Shapiro in the United States in the late 1980s.
What a session involves
Following a thorough assessment, the therapist guides the client through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones) while briefly focusing on a traumatic memory. The process continues until the memory no longer causes distress. Sessions last 60–90 minutes.
Who it's for
Anyone processing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, or distressing memories. EMDR is recommended by the WHO and NICE for PTSD treatment.
