Breathwork

Breathwork uses conscious breathing techniques to shift physiological and psychological states. Different modalities range from gentle nervous system regulation to deeply cathartic emotional release experiences. Breathwork can be profoundly transformative.

Cultural origin

Pranayama breathwork has roots in 5,000-year-old yogic tradition. Modern breathwork modalities (Holotropic, Transformational, Rebirthing, Wim Hof) were developed in the 20th century.

What a session involves

Sessions vary significantly by modality. Some involve lying down with guided rhythmic breathing set to music (Holotropic, Transformational). Others are more active or technique-focused. Sessions range from 60 minutes to 3+ hours. Facilitators should always conduct a health screening beforehand.

Who it's for

Anyone seeking stress relief, emotional release, spiritual experience, or nervous system regulation. Note: some breathwork modalities are contraindicated for certain health conditions — always disclose relevant health history to your practitioner.
